As was pointed out this week by Didier and last week by myself, Goten is an unremarkable character and personality in virtually all forms of media. It’s hard to do anything with him since he really doesn’t stand out at all in the show. In the game, he’s kinda all over the place with no real focus. His Majin Buu Saga Personality set has a vague “anti-discard pile” theme, as does his only named attack, but they are just garbage that doesn’t go anywhere or do anything spectacular at all. In fact, we never really set out to create a new Goten personality. We had actually been brainstorming ways to make Gotenks a playable main personality with his current levels as well as a new Lv. 4, but we just couldn’t come up with anything that didn’t either leave you with an overpowered personality or a severely neutered one. It seemed that cards like SPOOKED and Gotenks Flight would never see the light of deck. And then we thought “Well what if we just let a crap personality use Fusion cards?” Yeah, that could work.
So, Goten can now use all those awesome Vegito cards from the Fusion Saga as well as neat cards like Gotenks Kamikaze Ghost and Gotenks Potential. His power is a nice little boost to his level two, and while he doesn’t have a lot of great options for that level, you can at least have a nice combat the turn you use his power and even use it as a great jumping point to fuse into Gotenks Lv. 2 fairly swiftly. Since his new Virtual Lv. 1 power needs a Gotenks personality card in your Sensei Deck to go off, you are limited to only using the power twice per game at most since Goten lacks (and there’s no plan to add at this point) a Lv. 5. So while you can boost yourself to the decent World Games Saga Lv. 3 with Advanced Basics (one of my favorite cards), Goten is hardly suited for a MPPV deck (unless your gonna be bold and use Just Saiyan and add some anger, then that could be interesting).
But wait, there’s actually one more really awesome way to play the new Goten: NON TOKUI WAZA! Going this route you get a sweet beats stick with Goten the Brother.
Going the NTW route, you essentially get a Gohan the Winner Lv. 5 as early as turn one (plus a slight damage boost the turn it’s used). You can keep up a steady stream of damage and even build it up with Master Roshi Sensei. You could try for the World Games Saga Lv. 3 in a combat with the slime anger Brother gives you, but this is probably one deck I wouldn’t use Advanced Basics in just because you could really only use it once after getting off Lv. 1 (since it won’t work on double use powers) unless you had some consistent way to get to Goten Lv. 4. Still, a double beats with Brother and then a Fusion in Super Saiyan Gotenks would be quite the impressive combat, if you could pull it off.
So there you have it. A new Goten and four new ways to play him that you can even mix and match: Fusion, Most Powerful Personality, Non Tokui-Waza and Fused Personality Only cards. What way do you all think is best? What cards do you think Goten works well with now? Post card combos and deck lists here.
Later BroZ!
I actually really like this card, it makes me want to build up a black kamikaze ghost decked or free style ghost deck.
Interesting.
I’ve been trying to build a working fusion deck for a while. this maybe the way to go
Yeah that’s not a bit op. Also why the lack of level 5 Goten? There is no need to delay that.
Yay! Goten is usable! lol about time! I think he’s one of the most underrated characters of the show. After all, he is Goku’s son. It’s about time he got some respect lol
Now I just need to find a tournament to use him in 😉
I think there’s also a good potential for him as an ally main personality, since pretty early on he could be laying out Lv. 1 and 2 allies. An NTW ally deck with him, WGS Chi-Chi and WGS Videl Lv. 2 would be an automatic 6 attacks.
I am actually messing with this now. Damage is pretty good early, set-up for big plays is still slow. Working on that.
Interesting thing I forgot about NTW decks, you cannot use endurance. Little annoyances. Still this is that imaginative spark I needed to build stuff again. Thanks guys.
I think the idea of having a ton of cards that are quite strong if you are fused is kind of neat, but severely held back by how insanely difficult it is to fuse. Also, the fused personality powers are all pretty good (in a vacuum of course), but they do not ever really play on the theme of fusion at all. They are just kind of generically good (Vegito lv.1 is kind of an exception).
Imagine if fusions was much easier to pull off, just for example you could play a fusion personality as your level two so you just had to level up (maybe having an appropriate ally in play as well). Then you can have a game where people struggle to stay fused while the other play is trying to level them down… and cards like vegito’s leg catch get to actually get used, much like this personality is aiming to achieve.
It is a cool personality, but I still feel like fusion is a problem worth solving.
Obviously the battle to “stay fused” wasn’t something that was really present in the show, but I don’t know how else you can make all these cards that suck without being fused and are amazing while fused viable.
How come Goten can’t run Gotenks lv. 3 in his sensei deck? The Buu Saga rule book doens’t mention anywhere about Fusion personalities following the same rules as allies for deck construction.
And if they did, no one could use Gotenks lv. 1 or 2 as an ally anyway as the rule book specifically states that Hi-Techs can not be used as allies.
I didn’t think Kid Trunks had a level 5 either? Wouldn’t ruling that Goten can’t run Gotenks Lv. 3 mean that Gotenks Lv. 3 is literally an unusable card since Kid Trunks wouldn’t be able to run him either?
Kid Trunks lv. 1 from the Kid Buu saga allows you to use Future Trunks personality cards, allowing you to run Trunks lv. 5 from the Cell Games Saga. This is currently the only possible way to legally run Gotenks Lv. 3.
I may be a bit late to the party talking about fusion, but I always wanted to see something for Piccolo and Nail/Kami. Even if it’s not fusion per say, but something that used Nail and Kami as an ally that beefed up Piccolo after removing them from the game or something.
Does this make Advanced Basics a one win card in a 1-3 matchup? Gotenks power, go to 2, advanced basics, go to 3, win?
Yes, that works against 1-3 personalities for now. However we are working on some Fusion cards that we might change that in the future.
Can’t you also do this for level 4? I can’t find anything that says you can’t put gotenks level 3 in your sensei deck without a level 5. He isn’t considered an ally is he? Just tying to get facts straight.
