Kamikaze Ghost – The Unplayable Dream

Here’s a personality I have actually NEVER seen played. Ever. I don’t even think I’ve ever seen a decklist with this guy in it. One of only three ally-only personalities with special rules that only allow it to be played with one Main Personality (Cell Jr. 1 and Cell Jr. 2 are the other two personalities, in case you were wondering). So let’s take a look at yet another Majin Buu card that’s fit for the season if not for your deck.

The Upside

It’s a neat card in theory, basically something that can be used as a way to divert power stage loss away from Majin Buu and then blown up for nearly unstoppable mill damage. You can actually run up to six of these guys in your deck, giving the Majin a more viable choice for an Earth’s Spirit Bomb deck. As a last resort, you can blow your board mill your opponent for 24 cards, nearly a third of their deck. It would be interesting to see a deck that could do that with a well timed Z Warriors Gather, but the reality is you would be devoting, at the very least, seven cards in your deck for a moderate amount of damage that could not be repeated for the rest of the game.

The Downside

No mill support. There is no infrastructure in the game to support a viable mill deck outside of the Virtual Baba set. Add to that the restrictive nature of the card as well as it’s one-time use, you’ll find that it won’t be enough to even knock down an opponent halfway, something most Majin Buu decks should be able to do on their own turn one.

Ally rules. Kamikaze Ghost is still an ally and must obey ally rules. Meaning Majin Buu still has to be at the correct power stages to even start using the abilities of the Ghosts. Granted that Majin don’t generally have a lot of good ally options to begin with, but to use this ally you need to be playing more in the “Control” style with a character who practically defines the “Beats” genre.

-One and done. The mill damage is negligible and there’s no way to consistently cycle through the Ghosts to build up that damage. Since the Ghosts remove themselves from the game, there really is no reliable way to use them consistently throughout a match. There is an appealing combo with the League Only card, Krillin’s Help, but again the amount of set-up required for that is too much for too little.

Overall

It actually would’ve been very interesting to see this character have the same power, except one that didn’t require it to be removed from the game after use or even discarded. That would’ve made the deck more viable and fun, but as it stands this card is nearly on par (and shares many similarities) with Chiaotzu Lv. 2, what some consider to be the worst personality in the game.
