Last week, we openly playtested on our Twtich TV page with a new level one personality that was always so close to having his own archetype. Tien has always been much maligned in the game. Piccolo stole his signature technique and made his own archetype out of it, while Krillin has the superior version of a classic Crane School attack. Sure, we got Tien’s Flight to help out the character, but then both Vegeta and Krillin got personality powers that do almost the exact same thing, but better by virtue of not being removed from the game after use. Previous attempts to help Tien personality stacks were made obsolete by an evolving power chart, making the personality languish once again. So we fixed that, here’s the new personality for Tien decks that want to do something that doesn’t require Master Roshi’s Scouting Drill.
There you have it. We envisioned that Tien would be good if he was reworked as a so-called “suicide deck” personality. This actually fits him well in the show, as many of his moves and attacks are drawn directly from his lifeforce (one of which you’ll be seeing soon). For this, we added the ability for him to pay for his named energy attacks with life cards instead of power stages. Not only does this give him options when he’s at zero, but it also makes a prolonged Tien’s Focused Beam a secondary win condition after Flight (it also combos well with Arqua’s Arena if you don’t want to go the suicide route).
The main problem that we identified with the Tien Named deck was that many of Tien’s named cards like Tien Stands Ready and Tien’s Ready pointlessly remove themselves from the game. That meant even lackluster cards that you’d run just because they are Tien named couldn’t even be used without damaging your end game. Tien takes a page from Krillin and Vegeta‘s Lv. 1s here, after giving them inspiration for their previously mentioned Level 3s.
That was originally all this card did, but after some review and playtesting we felt that adding a card draw was the little extra oomph that Tien needed. He was made to be an attacker, but didn’t have the monster stages of Majin Buu or access to the card draw of the Saiyan Style. This made him stand up to those decks a little bit better.
That’s all for today, but not it for Tien. Check back later this week for a new Tien attack straight out of Dragon Ball. Later, BroZ!
I. Absolutely. Love. This. Card. Excellent job and thank you for making Tien worth playing!!
Tien Freestyle physical beats was already worth playing. I think this is an unnecessary card and over the top for Tien.
Classic theme of Tien; use his life force to beat those stronger than him. Glad I waited to do the deck on this guy. He definitely needed a boost though, good call on making these cards.
Tien has some pretty beefy power stages.
He kind of had to, considering Score went and made that weak-ass Yamcha cap out at 1.7m at level 1. Tien at least put a dent on Gotenks empowered Super Buu. Yamcha… can’t even be assed to fly himself? =P
“Weak-ass Yamcha” was whippin’ the crap out of Celestial Fighters there at the end. They didn’t exactly have small power levels. 😛
Hooray Tien!
I feel his power stages are little too high for a level 1, and you should do a level 1-3 or 4 set for him using this arch type.
I do love that it feels more like Tein from the show. As the power stages go you didn’t even have Krillin’s level 5 break 2 mill.
But over all i do like this card.
His power is good. His power levels being so high is a problem though. His level 1 is higher than any gohan or goku level 1….
I’ve noticed the people saying the power level is a problem. I don’t think it is. power levels in dbz is as relevant as vegeta and being a prince. It never really mattered as majin buu who was the most powerful was opted to be not used compared to the likes of roshi and 18. his power is amazing. It’s one of those too good to be true cards. free energy attacks at the cost of life cards? That to me is even better than most other level one powers I’ve seen but in fact one of the most fitting abilities I’ve seen aside from kami. his pur is however what I see as a problem. however I’m sure with more play testing tien will be placed into a spot of power he deserves to be in. good work on this one guys. as I’ve been wanting a tien thats worth his salt.
Power stages are fine, Tien won’t work as a typical beat down, his stages are not going to be a big deal. No single game will be broke unless Dende is Main (jk not even then). Especially considering, you know, Tien works towards energy cards better. Calm down people.
Hell, I like it, now my Tien freestyle might actually do something
Tien Freestyle was fine before this card IMO.
I think it’s one of the better designed cards virtual cards yet, but I would like his PUR to be 1 to counter his ability to pay for powerstages in life cards. May not even be needed, but I always liked to error on the side of caution.
Tien was never really a “power up” personality. Against Buu and Cell, he had to come out swinging as hard as he could in order to stand a chance, so it does make sense that he would have a high Lv. 1 power level and then drops from there.
The power level is fine if you think of it as the level 4 he always needed that you just don’t have to level to otherwise he would still blow ass
This might be my favourite virtual card yet. PUR seems a bit high, especially given he can pay for his energies without them.
Love it! About damn time!
🙂
Power stages are quite high, but it doesn’t really matter seeing there is no DPR and most people run buu/bojack/ these days anyways.
So how would Tien’s power work with Recoome’s Vogue Drill, which states your personality powers can’t discard cards from your deck? Would it make paying life cards instead of stages not work, or would it make all his energy attacks free?
Tien’s personality power isn’t discarding any cards from your deck, so it would have no effect.
